AI Readability Score
What this check reads on your page
Inside the page's main content region, the text is split into sentences at full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and their Chinese and Japanese forms, and at the boundary of every block element, so a heading and a list item are never read as one sentence. The score comes from the average sentence length, which is best at fifteen words and worst at thirty-five, and from the share of prose paragraphs under fifty words, counting only blocks that hold a sentence and are not mostly link text. It also notes whether the content uses bold, italic or highlighted text. A page with no sentence-length text is reported as unscored rather than failed.
Our verdict on the evidence
Evidence-backed Engines preferentially select easier, clearer text, and fluency rewrites improve citation rates in controlled sandboxes. A moderate, causal signal.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (arXiv 2311.09735)
The score is a proxy for a quality it cannot read: it counts words per sentence and per paragraph and never asks whether a sentence is clear, so a short muddled sentence passes and a long lucid one does not. What it stands in for is the retriever's window. A passage that fits inside one is quoted as written; one that runs past it is trimmed at whatever boundary the engine picks, which is rarely the boundary you would have chosen.

How to fix it
- Split any sentence past twenty-five words into two; the sentence tier is at its best near fifteen words on average.
- Keep paragraphs under fifty words; the paragraph tier scores the share of them that stay under that line.
- Write the content as paragraphs rather than as headings over lists of links; a block that is mostly link text does not count as prose.
- Bold the key term or figure in a passage; the check credits bold and italic text in the content region.
